Private Woodwind Instructor
Kelly Austermann is an active music educator, performing clarinetist, and scholar in the St. Louis area. She has performed with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hot Springs Festival Orchestra, the Gateway Festival Orchestra, the Greensboro Philharmonia, the Fountain Hills Chamber Players, the AKME Clarinet Duo, the Desert Bloom Clarinet Trio, Casella Sinfonietta, the Saint Louis Wind Symphony, the Vintage Brass Band, El Monstero, and the Lettermen. She can be heard in solo clarinet passages on the Grammy-nominated CD, Fireworks!, released under the Equilibrium label, and on In This Hid Clearing, released under the Naxos label.
Kelly has extensive teaching experience with students of all ages and ability levels. She is professor of clarinet and saxophone at East Central College. She is also the clarinet instructor for the band programs of the Mehlville, Fox, and Parkway West school districts where she teaches private lessons, coaches chamber music, and provides sectional instruction. Kelly has previously provided sectional instruction for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra in Mesa, AZ. She has taught both clarinet and saxophone through her employment with Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, NC; the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Summer Music Camp; and the Community Music Program in Columbia, MO. Many of her students have received superior ratings at performance competitions and have earned seats in honors ensembles.
She is also professor of music appreciation at East Central College and St. Louis Community College.
She has performed and presented research at the American Single Reed Summit Conference at Truman State University and at the Midwest Clarifest Conference. She has also presented research on popular American music during WWII at the American Musicological Society Scholars Conference in Tempe, AZ.
Kelly enjoys hiking with her dog Flash and playing board games.
